Realism from Mark Noble or confirmation of what many posters on here fear?

A lot of posters on here seem to hate and fear pretty much everything so not sure exactly what you refer to, but the two main points he brings up are clearly realistic.
1) We can't financially compete with the top clubs and if one of them stumps up big money for Rice then he'll be gone. 2) Top players want to go to the top clubs (in the Champions League) and we're not in that market. Our rivals for transfers are, for example, the teams who finish 4th-8th in Germany and Spain. We also need to focus on recruiting young players and developing them, bringing them from the academy to the first team.

The only issue with his article is his backing of Moyes and maybe a dig calling us fickle. We're not fickle; David Moyes record in 2022 is abysmal.
I agree we cannot compete with the financial powerhouses in the league; however, our squad is better than last season, so sitting 16th at the end of 2022 isn't good enough, especially after two successive seasons competing in the top 6/7.
I love Mark Noble; I also realise he had to toe the party line, but fuck me, even he can see David Moyes doesn't have a fucking clue.

You have to question the recruitment process and having looked at the players we have signed albeit early days im far from impressed. We were reportedly interested in Brereton Diaz last year but nothing materialised and having seen his exploits earlier this season including against us he looks like one who definitely got away. Scamacca just doesnt look like a natural goalscorer to me and although clearly a great talent im not convinced Paqueta is a good fit for us. We also seem to sign players who are injury prone and dont seem to be willing to play the premium for good young british talent who are already established at PL level and far more likely to hit the ground running than their foreign counterparts. I hope im proved wrong about the signings we've made and Downes has impressed me when given the chance but I'm starting to get a worrying feeling about the way things are headed as we hover above the trap door.

I didn't see where he called us fickle. Just said that there'll always be a group of fans who are unhappy and with social media they're a much louder presence now. Thing is though, if he's asked the question, what do you expect him to say? Oh yeah, the fans are right. That bloke who helped get me this job is shit. Hope he gets sacked soon and they bring in a new manager who'll probably try to get rid of me.
Of course he's going to back Moyes, especially to the media. He'd be an idiot to do otherwise.

Nagle, I should have clarified that he inferred a fickle fanbase. But your point is correct, which I also said.

I think he made a good point about about the effect of social media on fans attitudes. It amplifies extreme and minority views and people engage with them as though they are more widespread than they are. In a way I miss the 90s where atititudes and opinions of fans surfaced on the terraces rather than in people's dimly lit bedrooms. I felt the fanbase was more united.

I thought he'd shut the fuck up after his 'expected slump' bullshit. I won't be reading any of it, but no surprise he's having another pop. He's Sullivan's attack dog now and will yap when ordered 😂

My worry with Nobes is he’s part of a mindset of mediocracy.

its a bit of a nothing interview in truth, doesn't really say much, if anything, that isn't common sense.

Didn't really get the bit where he is talking about fan disillusion this season then all of a sudden the article takes a complete about turn and somehow Messi is shoehorned into the last few paragraphs.

Clever politicking there - quickly moving the Moyes conversation to Klopp to try to elevate Moyes achievements by conflating them with Klopp’s. Allardyce was good at that trick and it’s surprising how many people fall for it.

Any other Sporting Director/Director of Football would have openly slagged off the board and manager. All the DOF at other clubs do it as soon as they are appointed so don’t understand why Noble didn’t?
He’s also should have been more patronising to us supporters and pretended that Rice isn’t going anywhere and that we have the funds to compete with the big clubs.
He’s a disgrace!

Not much in it, he is a board puppet. He isn’t qualified for the job but it’ll appease some fans and he’ll do whatever he is told by G&S. I’ve always thought he comes across a bit dimlo when he talks about the actual game, bit like Stuart Pearce. Maybe he’ll take to the business side better.

Personally I'll give Nobes a chance. Let's face it he has got the job down to a fairly solid relationship with the board and Moyes so before he has put his feet under the table it wouldn't probably be the best thing straight off to bash the employers and the manager. Plus we don't know what is being said in house.

I'm a bit with Stowie.40 on this. I'll be honest, and admit I don't know much about what a Sporting Director does, but I'd prefer it if they weren't a board lacky or someone who is chummy with the manager.
Has any other club done anything similar to this?

I think people massively underestimate Mark's standing in the game. During the world cup there was a feature on Henderson saying he set up players together during covid. True, but only in part. Mark was an instrumental part of it and along with Henderson was responsible for getting all the other captains & players involved. He's universally respected & well-liked in the game. He has also, for years, lobbied behind the scenes for the club to have more of an identity and continuity - rather than having managers who chp & change styles so that each time a new one comes in, we require a complete reboot of the squad. Part of his role will be to promote that in order to give us a better chance to compete. Looking forward to him getting to work.

where in the new job description was it to dismiss fans genuine fears about the manager and the horrendous job he's done for the past twelve months? all I see him doing is basically saying fuck them, they're the vocal minority, every club has one and we know better
